We hit the road to showcase grassroots heroes driving environmental change, proving that big impact starts at the local level.
When we discovered that 85% of our readers were deeply concerned about environmental threats — and importantly, that 80% were eager to get involved — we knew it was time to leverage our platform for action. Partnering with YouTube’s Sustainability Creator Program, we launched Act Local, a vibrant 26-part series celebrating local environmental heroes making big impacts in their communities.
Travelling up Australia’s stunning east coast aboard an Explorer Bus, host Cameron Doyle connected with extraordinary individuals driving grassroots change, each story highlighting the transformative power of local action:
- Pete at Seabin using big data to save Sydney’s harbour
- Evan upcycling old adventure gear in rural Victoria
- Belinda growing a sea-roots movement of surfers fighting climate change
- Martin building self-sufficient housing in the form of Earthships
- Erchana who ran 150 marathons in 150 days to protect Australian wildlife
The Act Local series embodied our mission—making adventure and conservation inseparable through human-centered storytelling. We showcased relatable and powerful narratives, motivating viewers to consider how they could make meaningful changes themselves. The response was phenomenal, establishing Act Local as a permanent content vertical that continues spotlighting community-centric environmental action.
